NEW MOON IN VIRGO – Some changes may have an effortless quality to them (September 6, 2021)

Intermediate Astrology CourseIn the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 5:51 p.m. on Monday, September 6.  This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun conjunct (0°) at 15° of Virgo.  To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 15° of Virgo in your birth/natal chart.  The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.

New Moons always provide us with an opportunity for a new emotional start in the areas associated with the sign.  This time, we are focused on Virgo.  The higher expression of this sign includes being practical, efficient, precise, analytical, and health conscious.  The lower expression basically includes going too far with any of those things, such as being perfectionistic, being hyper analytical to the point of being critical, or being overly concerned with our health.  We may also be more prone to excessive worry or fear.  We need to remember that how we choose to express the energy of this New Moon, or anything in astrology, is up to us.  For example, we can choose to focus on the positive uses of Virgo’s energy, such as productivity, organization, hard work, and being of service.

To be honest, this New Moon is an odd combination of influences that actually can support each other if used appropriately.

  • Typically, a Virgo New Moon means we want to slowly and carefully analyze everything before taking action. However, in addition to the Sun and Moon being located in Virgo, Mars is also transiting this sign.  Mars, which is the planet of action, typically holds back when in Virgo.  Given the tendency toward restraint provided by all this Virgo energy, you would think that we might be best advised to resist taking any actions during this time.
  • However, the New Moon is in an exact trine (120°) to Uranus, and I do mean EXACT (a difference of only 0°01’). Anytime an aspect is that close, the influence of the planets involved is very powerful.  A trine always represents an easy flow of energy, and Uranus is the planet most associated with change.  Therefore, change is not only likely but actually might be relatively free of angst.

However, this may be a bit tricky to navigate.  Where Virgo wants to plan before taking action, Uranus is going to do its best to bring us events that leave us feeling unprepared.  Surprise is often Uranus’s middle name.  But, if we handle these energies effectively, these two influences can work well together.  For example, if Uranus brings something unexpected into our life, we should not resist it.  However, we can (and should) use the analytical skills of Virgo to make sure the change is practical.

To help Virgo feel a little more in control, it may help to narrow down the options regarding the areas of our lives in which changes might occur.  Although anything is possible with Uranus, it is currently located in Taurus.  Taurus is associated with the earth underneath our feet but also the physical structures that are built on that earth.  Another topic associated with Taurus is money, including the physical items that we can buy with that money, the jobs in which we earn our money, and/or our investments and savings.  Changes in any of these Taurean-focused areas may be more likely during this time.

It also may be reassuring to Virgo to remember that this extremely strong trine relationship is a supportive, easy flow of energy.  This means that any changes in these areas will likely be easier to make now compared to other times, which is why we shouldn’t resist them.  For many people, changes can be challenging, but they may go relatively smoothly and may not be emotionally upsetting.

And luckily, Taurus prefers that change happens in a slow and steady way.  Therefore, Uranus may bring the unexpected into our lives, but any changes may unfold at a manageable pace.  Also, the slower pace of change will hopefully allow us the time we need to tap into the logical, analytical skills provided by the Sun, Moon, and Mars in Virgo.  This methodical approach will hopefully ensure that the changes are practical, effective, and long-lasting.

Accessing the logic of Virgo and the groundedness of Taurus may also be important because the New Moon and Mars are all in oppositions (180°) to Neptune.  These could cause us to feel uncertain, discouraged, or directionless.  We may want to escape, which can sometimes include using substances or getting lost in fantasy.  However, this will only happen if we fail to utilize the gifts provided by Virgo and Taurus.  They are both earth signs, so any feelings of confusion may lift if we give ourselves a short “time out” and engage in “earthy things” (e.g., go for a walk out in nature, get a massage).  A little time away from the situation and getting grounded may provide much-needed perspective.  There is also a positive side of these oppositions to Neptune, which is powerfully positioned in its home sign of Pisces.  We have the potential to actively seek out opportunities for creativity, forgiveness, and spiritual understanding.  Again, the choice about how we express the oppositions is up to us.

At the time of the New Moon, Mercury is in a trine (120°) to the North Node and a sextile (60°) to the South Node.  This means we are mentally open to new ways of doing things while also being able to access the wisdom we have gained from the past.  Additionally, Mercury is in a trine (120°) to Saturn.  This supportive aspect should increase our ability to think rationally, get organized, and make decisions that are well thought out, all of which may help us counter any potential for confusion brought in by Neptune (see last paragraph).  However, we do need to be a little careful in our communication with others because there is an opposition (180°) between Mercury and Chiron that could cause misunderstandings, especially if we take things too personally.

There is yet another trine (120°) between Venus and Jupiter.  This aspect usually means we feel an increased sense of optimism, especially about our relationships and finances.  However, it’s important to note that Venus is also in a square (90°) to Pluto, which may make those same relationships and finances intense and potentially volatile.  Anytime Pluto is involved, it means there is the potential for power struggles or something being revealed that was previously hidden.  One way to work with both Jupiter’s and Pluto’s influence on Venus might be to enjoy feeling more optimistic but to wisely avoid engaging in anything that has the potential to be disruptive, at least for a few days.

As we’ve been talking about in the last few Moon Updates, we’ve been experiencing an on-going trine (120°) between Mars and Pluto for at least the last month or so.  At the time of this New Moon, this Mars-Pluto trine is exact (an orb of less than 1°), which makes the influence of the trine even more powerful.  This can help us focus on our goals and take actions to overcome any perceived obstacles.  But, given Pluto is in retrograde, we may also be called on to rework a project or revamp our goals in some way.  It continues to be an excellent time to clear out any clutter in our lives, whether that be things, emotions, relationships, jobs, mental patterns, or anything that has become stagnant in our lives.

On Friday, September 10, Venus leaves Libra and dives headlong into the deep, emotional waters of Scorpio, where it will remain until October 8.  If we are experiencing any challenges within a relationship or financial situation, this will support us in exploring them deeply.  When in Scorpio, Venus isn’t interested in anything superficial.  Whatever we desire (Venus) will be experienced passionately and intensely (Scorpio).  However, Venus in Scorpio does tend to be fearful of being too vulnerable or giving up our power.  Although we may long for depth and intimacy, we do need to be selective about who we trust with our heart.

Then on Thursday, September 16, Mars moves out of Virgo and into Libra, where it will remain until October 31.  During this 6-week timeframe, we may feel motivated to work with others toward a common goal.  Our actions may be characterized as gracious, charming, and diplomatic.  These qualities can be used authentically; however, the lower expression of Mars in Libra can include using these qualities to be manipulative or passive-aggressive.  When Mars is in Libra, we can be rather indecisive regarding our actions.  But in general, we are interested in understanding all sides of a situation, and we will actively seek opportunities to be cooperative, diplomatic, and peaceful.

Overall, the time of this Virgo New Moon is an odd combination of the need for a grounded, realistic approach while still remaining flexible and open to any changes that seem to come “out of the blue.”  Our goal should be to seek solid progress (Uranus in Taurus) that is practical and effective (Virgo).  If we can integrate these two different needs, then we may find that any changes made now have an effortless quality to them.  This is especially true if our underlying motivation is to be of service, which is one of the hallmarks of Virgo.  We are all well-advised to use the analytical skills of Virgo to make sure that any Uranean ideas are feasible.  It may help to remember that the underlying goal of Uranus is always to bring more freedom into our lives.  It does this by asking us to take a fresh look at something in our lives, especially if it has recently become stagnant or stale.
