In the Pacific Time Zone, the Moon will be full at 6:07 p.m. on Friday, June 21. With this Full Moon, the Sun in Cancer will be in opposition (180°) to the Moon in Capricorn. To further clarify how this Full Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 1° of Cancer and 1° of Capricorn in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with those two houses are going to be most impacted by this Full Moon’s presence. (NOTE: Click here to learn how to find the transiting Moon in your chart.)
Full Moons provide us with the opportunity to check in and evaluate how we are balancing two areas of our lives. This time, we are looking at Cancer and Capricorn:
- Cancer: The higher expression of Cancer includes being nurturing, family-oriented, emotionally sensitive, security seeking, and psychic/intuitive. The lower expression could mean being overly moody, dependent, fearful, or shy.
- Capricorn: The best qualities of Capricorn include being disciplined, responsible, practical, patient, hardworking, organized, and being a leader. The lower expression can involve being overly critical, conventional, or status-seeking.
Before we talk about this Capricorn Full Moon, bear with me while we take a step back and look at the bigger astrological picture.
This is the first of two back-to-back Full Moons in Capricorn. This one on June 21 is occurring at 1° of Capricorn, and second will be on July 21 at 29° of Capricorn. These degrees at the beginning and end of a sign are referred to as “critical degrees,” with the first at 0°-1° often coinciding with major beginnings and the latter at 29°-0° often occurring around the time of something ending. Capricorn is a cardinal sign, which means action is often taken. Therefore, it could mean that these two Capricorn Full Moons coincide with either (a) one short-term project beginning and ending within about 4 weeks or (b) one long-term project beginning around June 21 and a different project ending around July 21. Capricorn tends to move slowly and carefully, so the latter long-range option might be more likely.
Next, we also need to talk about something called the Aries Point. Without going into too much technical detail, this is basically when planets are located at 0° of one of the four cardinal signs (i.e., Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). As mentioned above, cardinal signs are about taking action, so when a planet crosses the Aries point, the qualities of the planet and sign are pushed into public view for everyone to see.
Why am I mentioning this? On Monday, June 17, both Mercury and Venus will move into the cardinal sign of Cancer (0°). Then, the Sun also moves into Cancer (0°) the day before the Full Moon (i.e., Thursday, June 20). Because they are so powerful, Aries Points tend to impact us for more than just the exact day that a planet crosses 0°. With this 3-planet event, it will likely be affecting us from about June 16 -23.
What might this mean? Cancer, as described above, focuses on nurturing and family, safety, security, and intuitive abilities. Briefly, the planets involved that are moving into Cancer include:
- Mercury (June 17-July 3): Our thinking and communication is based on emotions and intuition rather than logic.
- Venus (June 17-July 12): We tend to become very emotionally connected to whatever we desire in our lives (e.g., projects, people, money, possessions).
- Sun (June 20-July 23): Our identity may involve our home, families, or anything that helps us feel centered, safe, and secure.
How this plays out in each of our lives individually and within society can vary greatly, but it’s safe to say that this could be a very emotional and intuitive time. Relationships of all kinds become important, but also anything that we feel passionate about. We also may become increasingly focused on making sure our loved ones and ourselves are safe and secure. The Aries Point, though, means that this is a time of high public visibility. If something has been hidden from view, now is the time when it’s likely to emerge from the shadows. Information may be shared or disclosed that normally would be kept private. Although certain issues will be almost impossible to conceal, we can deal with any disclosures by expressing the higher qualities of Cancer (e.g., kindness, sympathy, protection).
Within the time period of this Aries Point activation (June 16-23), we have the Capricorn Full Moon on Friday, June 21. This means that however the Full Moon is impacting us may be harder to keep it under wraps. Cap tells us that we might need to step into a leadership role that taps into our past experiences and wisdom. Although it is a sign that prefers to move slowly and methodically toward making a decision, the Aries Point/cardinal energy is telling us that a decision is needed or imminent.
Complicating the astrological picture is the fact that the decision may not be made in a Capricorn-like logical or explainable way. At the time of the Full Moon, the Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Cancer are all conjunct (0°) each other and are all opposing (180°) the Moon in Capricorn. The scales are weighted pretty heavily on the Cancer side of the astrological teeter-totter. Therefore, we may find ourselves making decisions that are based on our feelings or intuitive hunches. We simply may “know” what the best course of action is and have a hard time explaining it.
As with all Full Moons, our goal is to find a balance between what seems to be opposites. With this Full Moon, we may find ourselves (or others) vacillating between our head (Capricorn) and our heart (Cancer). This could leave us feeling stuck unless we can tap into both ends of the continuum. The best possible outcome will happen if we can creatively find ways to use both skills (i.e., head and heart). For example, Capricorn can provide us with patience and wisdom while we sort through our feelings or intuitive hunches. Or we can use Capricorn’s objectivity and penchant for organization while still making sure our emotions and needs are acknowledged in any decisions that we make.
But as I mentioned at the end of the last Moon Update, Mars is active for the entire month of June. This provides further impetus regarding making decisions and taking action. For example, there is an exact sextile (60°) between Mercury and Mars (orb of 0°29’). Sextiles are positive, but we often have to make a conscious decision to use the support being offered. With this aspect, there is a positive flow of energy between our thinking/communication and the grounded energy of Mars in Taurus. This could provide us with the strength, courage, and determination to move forward. But unlike the mentally-focused Gemini New Moon two weeks ago when the energy told us to “think it and then do it,” all the emotional Cancer energy means that this is a good time to “feel it and then do it.” And given Cancer is also highly intuitive, it may be best to “feel and intuit it and then do it.”
At the time of the Full Moon, there is also an exact inconjunct (150°) between the Sun and Pluto (orb of 0°16’). This may indicate that whatever “feeling decisions” we make could require some uncomfortable adjustments. For some of us, this energy could feel unsettling, as if it might overpower us. If we can manage it successfully, those adjustments could lead to profound transformations and healing. Pluto, though, is also about power and control, so some of us may feel like there are external issues that seem to be controlling our choices. We need to remember that we always have a choice, even if the choice is to reframe what is happening or to decide not to decide. But if we can “feel our way through” to a decision, it will likely be one that maintains our individuality and allows us to express our inner power in new and healthy ways.
One final note: The Sun and Moon are in what is called an “out-of-sign” square (90°) to Neptune. Although this t-square (right triangle) configuration is relatively weak, Neptune is particularly strong right now because it is in its own sign of Pisces and located at 29° (critical degree for ending). This can increase our ability to be compassionate, intuitive, and creative. However, some of us need to be extra vigilant right now. This could cause us to engage in codependent, people pleasing, or rescuing behaviors, play a victim role, or get pulled into a situation where our boundaries are not being respected. For those who are sensitive to energy (i.e., empaths, clairsentients), this is also a good time to actively protect and cleanse our energy systems so we don’t absorb or hold onto someone else’s emotions or physical issues.
If a final decision about a new beginning isn’t made around the time of the Capricorn Full Moon, it might occur during the last week of June. On Wednesday, June 26, Mercury will trine (120°) Saturn. This is an excellent day to concentrate and pay attention to important details. Our minds will be clearer and more objective than usual. These supportive qualities make for a great time to make sound decisions, even in complex situations.
But the window of opportunity for decision making doesn’t stay open for long. On Saturday, June 29, Saturn begins its annual retrograde period (through November 15). Although we can still start something new during this retrograde period, we are more likely to encounter obstacles that slow down our forward progress. This is the time of year when we are asked to reflect and reassess rather than start something new. But it is a great time to slowly and methodically work on something that has already begun because we will have increased patience and discipline.
Overall, this first of two back-to-back Capricorn Full Moons is likely to coincide with a beginning of some kind. Although the strong Cancer energy may be telling us to “hide out” in order to feel safe and secure, the strong Aries Point energy could make that difficult. Decision making is a big focus right now. If the idea of making a change brings up fear, it may be helpful to ask ourselves (a) are we feeling afraid because its unsafe or (b) is this simply uncomfortable because it’s new? If the former, then don’t act. But if it’s the latter, it may be time to leave our comfort zone and take a step (or two) forward. We may find out that we can take care of ourselves even if we are feeling fearful. This is a good time to remember the quote by Erin Hanson, “What if I fall? Oh, but darling, what if you fly?”
