In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 6:39 p.m. on Thursday, September 14.  This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun conjunct (0°) at 21°58’ of Virgo.  To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 21°58’ of Virgo in your birth/natal chart.  The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.  (NOTE:  Click here to learn how to find the transiting Moon in your chart.)

New Moons always provide us with an opportunity for a new emotional start in the areas associated with the sign.  This time, we are focused on Virgo:

  • The higher expression of this sign includes being practical, efficient, precise, and analytical.
  • The lower expression can lead to being overly perfectionistic or even picky.

Virgo is a mutable earth sign.  Mutable signs are especially skilled at being adaptable and flexible, which can help us adjust to any changes occurring in our lives.  Virgo New Moons can be a very productive time, even though there’s often a quiet gentleness to Virgo’s energy.  It’s definitely time to buckle down and “face the music” when it comes to any “life tasks” that have recently been put on the back burner.

The Virgo energy does a happy dance when we clean, clear clutter, organize, and bring order out of apparent chaos.  This could include the obvious option to declutter or organize our space.  However, it’s also a great time to do the same with our inner life, such as cleaning up our diet or eliminating beliefs, thought patterns, or old emotions that no longer serve us.

Although not referenced that often, we should remember that Virgo is the sign most often associated with healing and healers.  I’m sure all of us would prefer to have a very precise Virgo filling that hypodermic needle before the shot is administered!  At the time of the New Moon, not only are the Sun and Moon located in Virgo, but so, too, is Mercury.  This provides us with an extra dose of Virgo energy to help us heal, especially physically.

Up until the New Moon, many of us may feel like we’ve recently been doing a lot of deep thinking.  The Virgo energy often prefers to be alone to do its best work.  But once Mercury goes direct less than 24 hours after the New Moon (see more on this below), our communication with others will increase.  It’s also likely that we will find that our thinking gradually becomes clearer.  Pieces of information that have felt disconnected or swirling around us may suddenly fall into place and result in clarity and new realizations.

Back on Sunday, September 3, Venus ended its very important retrograde phase and is now moving direct.  If we have done the work of the retrograde phase, which began at the end of July and continued through all of August, then we may have a renewed understanding regarding our current needs and desires within relationships and our finances.  This could provide us with the inner confidence that helps us determine what should continue in our lives or what needs to end.

As mentioned above, within a few hours of the Virgo New Moon (Friday, September 15), Mercury will end its retrograde phase and begin moving direct again.  Although it may take a few days for things to pick up speed, we will likely see a decrease in any recent communication or technological challenges.  While in retrograde, we were asked to review and perhaps revamp how we approach certain tasks.  We also may have been thinking about some new choices.  Now, things may feel like they are finally coming together and are making sense.  We feel ready to make some important decisions.  Virgo is about serving, so if some of those ideas have to do with how we can humbly serve others, then all the better.

However, we will all be experiencing an interesting mixture of energy for the next month or so.  Once Mercury and Venus are moving direct, this will mean that the 5 planets that are closest to the Sun (i.e., the personal planets which are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) will all be moving direct.  But as of Sunday, September 3, when Jupiter began its annual retrograde phase, all 5 of the outer planets (i.e., Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are now in retrograde.  We may find that our personal life feels full of activities, stimulating thoughts, and even goals we want to accomplish.  However, with all 5 of the outer planets in retrograde for about the next month, this can also be experienced as a quiet time of inner reflection and integration.  Both of influences will likely be present and will need to be addressed.  One way this may manifest is that we may feel ready to move forward, but the retrograde energy slows us down or requires that we expend a bit more effort than we expected to achieve a desired goal.  (NOTE:  Click here to read my blog post called Planets in Retrograde and How to Thrive During Mercury Retrograde.)

But overall, there is a great deal of support for doing all of the above because there is a planetary configuration called an earth grand trine.  This is an equilateral triangle; i.e., at least one planet is  located in each of the 3 corners and each corner is in a trine (120°) to the other 2 corners.  This grand trine is composed of the following:

  1. Jupiter & Uranus (in Taurus)
  2. Sun & Moon (in Virgo)
  3. Pluto (in Capricorn)

With 5 planets involved, it would take quite a bit of time to thoroughly analyze this earth grand trine.  In short, grand trine are very positive.  This one will support us in seeing new possibilities and making any necessary changes (Uranus) to let go of what is no longer relevant or needed (Pluto), which will support us in expanding (Jupiter).  Pluto also gives us the energy, drive, and motivation to move forward and transform into something new, like the phoenix rising from the ashes.  The grand trine impacts everything previously discussed in a positive way, such as having insights and revelations that bring clarity, understanding what needs to be cleaned up or cleared out in order to allow forward progress, and knowing what we want and desire.  Given earth signs are involved, whatever changes we are ready to make will likely have a practical, down-to-earth application.  And Jupiter may bring both optimism and a bit of a luck with it!

Actually, there is a 6th planet involved, because this grand trine is in what is called a kite formation.  The corner of the triangle that includes the Sun and Moon is in opposition (180°) to Neptune.  Additionally, Neptune is forming sextiles (60°) to the other two corners of the triangle (i.e., Jupiter-Uranus & Pluto).  Neptune is referred to as “the tail of the kite,” and it provides us with an outlet for all of this positive energy and increases the chance that we will be successful at accessing it.

Specifically, Neptune is helping us by providing access to creativity, spirituality, and compassion.  When the earth signs of the grand trine are combined with the energy of Neptune, it means that we have the potential to access both practical discernment and our intuition.  However, the lower expression of Neptune needs to be avoided, which includes becoming a martyr or engaging in any form of escapism.  If we feel pulled in that direction, it will be important to breathe and use physical movement (earth signs) to get back in touch with “reality.”

Within the grand trine, the tightest aspects are the trines (120°) between the Sun-Moon and Uranus (orb = 1°01’).  As we have often discussed before, Uranus can bring the unexpected.  Luckily, the mutability of Virgo and Neptune being in watery Pisces can also help us flow with any of the unexpected events or influences that crop up during the time of the New Moon.  If we can adjust, adapt, and flow, something very positive could come to us “out of the blue” around the time of this New Moon.  It may not look like what we expected, but it could be even better!

It should be mentioned that there is an exact square (90°) between Venus and Jupiter.  This aspect is very powerful because the orb is only 1°00’.  Within both our relationships and finances, we should be a little careful.  We could become overly optimistic or lack the discipline that is needed in order to tap into the positive energy described above.  Or, we could become so excited about something that we overlook potential “red flags.”  Especially given the strong influence of Virgo right now, moderation is key!

A few of other aspects are worth noting:

  • Mercury will be in an opposition (180°) to Saturn, which could indicate having some serious conversations or making some important decisions.  We need to use the positive energy described above to avoid slipping into negative thinking or expecting the worst.
  • Given that Mercury (communication) is in a free-flowing trine (120°) to Jupiter (excess), many of us will feel more “chatty” then usual.  However, trines can provide a bit too much impetus, and words could be spoken a bit too easily and regretted later.
  • Luckily, Venus is in a supportive trine (120°) to Chiron.  If we can choose our words carefully, especially if they relate to relationships or finances, then this trine gives us an opportunity to heal some old wounds or feelings of vulnerability.  This could lead to important personal growth and an increase in our self-esteem and self-worth.
  • Adding support for this is an opposition (180) between Mars and Chiron, which usually increases our strength to actively overcome obstacles on our path toward healing.

The Equinox will occur on Saturday, September 23, which is when the Sun moves into Libra and marks the start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere.  With Mars also in Libra all during the month of September, we will have ample energy and motivation to bring more harmony, cooperation, and balance into our lives and especially our relationships.  Compromising and negotiating are emphasized.  However, decision making may be more challenging during this month-long transit of Libra because we more easily see all sides of a situation.

Overall, this Virgo New Moon is a time of both forward progress and inner contemplation.  Both are important.  The Virgo energy can be powerful, it also tends to prefer being quiet, humble, and unobtrusive.  It prefers to work behind the scenes.  This can be a very productive time for clearing, cleaning, and organizing.  We should use this opportunity because October will bring us our 2nd eclipse season of 2023.  This, combined with Mars moving into passionate Scorpio, will ramp up the energy substantially.  For now, we are advised to tap into the very supportive energies provided to us in order to manage practical affairs and mundane tasks in our life.  However, due to all 5 outer planets moving in retrograde, this is one of those times when “slow and steady wins the race.”  Therefore, make forward progress, but there’s no need to rush.  Instead, focus on doing a task well, which Virgo loves!
