In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 9:07 p.m. on Saturday, November 14. This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun in conjunction (0°) at 24° of Scorpio. To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 24° of Scorpio in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.
As is true with all New Moons, this one allows us the opportunity for new beginnings and new emotional starts in the areas associated with the sign. In some ways, this is particularly true with the year’s Scorpio New Moon, which I will explain shortly.
The higher expression of Scorpio includes keywords like intensity, depth, determination, investigation, transformation, and healing. However, it’s lower expression can include being over-bearing, intolerant, secretive, and even jealous. However, this sign is complicated, which is easier to understand when we talk about the symbols used to represent it. As I’ve mentioned in previous Moon Updates, the overarching symbol for Scorpio is a phoenix, which is destined to die and be reborn. But the process of the phoenix’s transformation comes in stages that we can either work with or block.
- The scorpion is the first phase; this is when we are hiding out underground, feeling defensive, and ready to use our stinger if we feel threatened.
- The second phase is the horse, which moves out of the shadows and into the light. Depending on what is needed, it can stand still, walk, or run. It’s a tall animal, so it has some perspective of the ground it is traversing.
- Some astrologers say the next symbol is the eagle, while others say a dove. Regardless, it is a bird that is flying above the earth and has even greater perspective than the horse. The ability to fly comes from healing whatever issues kept it either underground (scorpion) or on the ground (horse).
- Our ultimate goal is to transform and heal to the point where we become the phoenix, die, and are reborn. In that way, we start the process all over again as we strive for a new level of transformation and healing during our soul’s journey in this lifetime.
We all have the option to progress through these stages many times in our lives, but the annual Scorpio New Moon is always a powerful opportunity to take a leap forward toward transformation and healing.
However, this year, we have some extra special support for doing this, but only if we choose to use it. The day before the New Moon (Friday, November 13), Mars (finally!) ends its retrograde phase and starts moving direct again. Many of us will feel a release from what has felt like super-charged energy that has been blocked from being expressed. As I’ve mentioned several times, when Mars is retrograde in Aries, it feels like a firecracker inside a pressure cooker. Although it will be moving direction again, Mars will still be in Aries. This means that there’s still a firecracker, but it will no longer be inside a pressure cooker. Hence the “release”!
It will take a week or so before Mars gets back up to speed, but the shift in energy will likely be noticeable. While Mars was in retrograde, we were being asked to reconsider the direction(s) we were going in. We did this to make sure the course we were on is taking us to the next level of our spiritual evolution. It wasn’t a time of action but of reflection, which is why the pressure has been building.
Now, let’s return to this New Moon. Given the chronological proximity of Mars turning direct and the Scorpio New Moon, it’s very likely that the qualities of Scorpio will intertwine with the energy that is released. Scorpio is a fixed water sign, which means it can be described as “stuck” (fixed) emotions (water). Therefore, it’s likely that the initial phase of Mars going direct will involve a release of stagnant emotional energy. And given Scorpio is also associated with deep, transformational healing, we are being given an amazing opportunity. As we release whatever feels stagnant, unclear, and/or blocked, we can heal.
But, keep in mind that Scorpio is also deep and intense. In order for this possible transformation to occur, we may need to face some issues that have been hidden in the darker parts of our psyches. (NOTE: All of this can also apply to the psyches of others and of society.) Some of us will be willing to do this work, but some will get stuck underground, feeling fearful and guarded. Those who are brave enough to move into the shadows and explore the truth will be released from the darkness to become the horse and possibly even the eagle/dove. And if we are truly successful, then the process will start all over again when the phoenix bursts into flames and is reborn.
How is this going to happen? Suddenly changes are possible, especially if we have been resisting change. Or could be that the “final straw” is reached that results in taking steps that are overdue. However, this part of change process may require pulling inward and doing some private “deep diving.” It’s OK to take some “time out” to do this work. Information that has been hidden may be revealed. Truths may need to be faced, including looking at what has been blocking our progress that needs to be released.
The good news is there are supportive trines (120°) between the Sun/Moon and Neptune. Neptune may bring intuitive insights or dreams that help guide the changes. It also means that we are supported (trine) in moving from fear to faith (Neptune). However, there’s also an opposition (180°) between Mercury and Uranus at the time of the New Moon, which could mean that we feel misunderstood, have disagreements with others, or feel distracted. All of these provide further support to temporarily take a step back, create some private space/time for healing, and do the required inner work.
During this Scorpio New Moon, there is also a t-square (right triangle), which is a planetary configuration that will likely “kick us in the butt” if we are resisting “doing the work” required of this lunar event. T-squares require (demand!) change. In this one, Venus and Mars are in an opposition (180°) and both are squaring (90°) the long-standing trio of planets in Capricorn (i.e., Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto). Venus indicates that our relationships and finances may be involved in some way.
Additionally, given the “focal” position in this t-square happens to be all the planets in Cap, it’s very likely that the emotional healing and changes that are occurring around the New Moon will impact the structures and responsibilities in our lives (Capricorn). With Saturn and Capricorn so powerfully involved with the New Moon, this is another reason why we may need to slow down and turn inward. Capricorn often manifests in the form of restrictions, but those restrictions will likely be temporary. This inward exploration may also involve looking into our past (Saturn) to more clearly understand where we are now and where we need to go (and grow).
Luckily, we have support in doing all of this because the Scorpio New Moon is in a sweet sextile (60°) to all three of the planets in Capricorn. These sextiles tell us that we have the ability to expand (Jupiter), learn our life lessons (Saturn), and transform (Pluto). We are being given the support we need to move forward; but again, we have to be willing to do the work and face those dark Scorpio corners. If we can do this, then later in the month, we may feel ready to use the courage provided by Mars in Aries to take bold steps.
On Saturday, November 21, Venus leaves diplomatic Libra behind and dives into the intensity of Scorpio. It will remain there until the middle of December. All of our relationships (including our relationship with our finances) become intense. If we care about something (Venus), then we may feel very passionate about it, even to the point of obsession. We aren’t interested in anything superficial right now.
Luckily, on the same day, the Sun leaves Scorpio and moves into Sagittarius. This will help us look beyond ourselves and see things from a broader perspective. It also lightens the mood substantially, and we may feel more optimistic and hopeful about all those changes that are coming into our lives.
Overall, this Scorpio New Moon is providing us with an amazing gift. If we are willing to do the work, we could see a major leap forward in our emotional healing. However, we may need to pull inward to explore where any dust bunnies might be hiding in our psyches. But if we are brave enough to explore those dark corners, then forward motion is coming. There’s no need to rush. Everything will unfold in Divine Order and in Divine Timing. We can all trust that new energy is coming into our lives, and we will soon feel ready to tackle that new project that we’ve been thinking about recently. However, preparation for this change may involve letting go of something that has provided a foundation in our lives and even defined us. We may need time to adjust, recover, and/or grieve. And just one final note: As the healing work is happening, our inner children may be frightened by the dark places we need to go. We need to remember to be gentle with ourselves and provide loving parenting if our inner child is scared. If we can do this, then the child will delight at being able to move out the darkness and ride the horse or possibly even fly with the eagle/dove.
