In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 6:16 p.m. on Friday, July 9. This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun conjunct (0°) at 19° of Cancer. To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 19° of Cancer in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.
New Moons always provide us with an opportunity for a new emotional start in the areas associated with the sign. This time, we are focused on Cancer. The higher expression of the sign includes being nurturing, compassionate, family-oriented, emotional, and intuitive. The lower expression is associated with being overly sensitive, moody, dependent, or fearful.
Here’s an example of how that can play out. One of the key symbols for Cancer is a mothering energy, which can be delightful. However, when taken to an extreme, the mothering energy can become smothering. It’s up to us to choose how the energy will be expressed. In this example, we need to consciously give nurturing energy and not violate boundaries in our attempts to help or fix someone.
As a cardinal water sign, Cancer’s focus is on actively (cardinal) working with emotional energy (water). Our feelings, around the time of the New Moon, can actually serve as roadmaps to help guide us toward our next steps on our soul’s journey. This is definitely not a time to ignore or deny our feelings, as this would be a missed opportunity. If taking a specific action feels right, then it’s probably a good choice. If we feel hesitancy, then it may be the wrong choice or the wrong time. Listen to those feelings!
Going back to that mothering energy, this is also a good time to nurture and comfort others, but also ourselves. Given the chaotic energy that will be present during the entire month of July (see below), the time of the New Moon is a good time to choose actions that are calming, comforting, and soothing.
Although the New Moon is important, we need to discuss a fixed t-square that will be impacting us for most of July. As we have been discussing, a powerful square (90°) between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus is impacting all of us this entire year. This revolutionary energy is designed to wake us up both individually and collectively. Events that are occurring in our personal lives and on a global level are meant to show us that “the old way” is no longer serving us and we would be best served by trying something new and progressive.
During July, Mars in Leo activates this square by opposing (180°) Saturn and squaring (90°) Uranus. These squares and the opposition form a right triangle in which Uranus is located in what is referred to as the focal position (the planet that is being squared by both ends of the opposition). Uranus is the energy of change, so given it’s in the focal position, this means that unexpected events will likely occur this entire month. Most human beings aren’t fond of change, but this is one of those times when it may help to reframe whatever happens as Divinely orchestrated and designed to help us grow, because it is! Given Mars in Leo is involved in this t-square, we may find we have the courage we need to face these changes. In fact, some of us may actually be able to view whatever is happening as a grand adventure.
Unfortunately, whenever Mars is in an opposition (180°) to Saturn, we often feel that our efforts (Mars) are blocked (Saturn). If we try to force our will in a situation, the obstacles will likely just become greater. This is tricky because Mars is about taking action. This means we want to act, but how do we act if we encounter resistance? It will help if we can tap into the higher expression of Leo’s energy, which is the sign in which Mars is passing through at this time. Actions may be more successful if they are predicated on giving from a heart-centered place. They are less likely to be successful if we base our actions on the lower expression of Leo, which could include making decisions based on the needs of our ego, a desire for acknowledgement, and/or even to stir up drama.
Also, Mars in Leo can be used effectively if we focus on cultivating our faith in our ability to courageously deal with whatever changes Uranus puts in our path. A good mantra to use this month is, “I’ve got this!” We may not like what is happening, but that doesn’t mean that we aren’t fully capable of doing whatever is needed to adjust and adapt. Perhaps, we may even move in a totally new and unexpected direction.
Where are all these changes likely to occur in our lives? There are several possible clues:
- If you have your natal chart, you can look for the house in which Uranus is located (15° of Taurus). The issues associated with that house may give you ideas about where changes will be occurring.
- Given Uranus is located in Taurus, any changes may be associated with Taurean issues of finances, Mother Earth, and our need to care for our bodies using our five senses.
- But overall, Uranus may shake things up in any area of our lives where energy has become stagnant. As has been true all year, the challenge is to use what we have learned from the “old way” (Saturn) and allow something new and different to emerge (Uranus). This Mars-Saturn-Uranus energy may feel very chaotic, but it’s designed to break up the stagnation and support a new way . . . even the start of a whole new life for some of us.
Remember, this t-square between Mars-Saturn-Uranus will be present for the entire month of July. But for now, let’s return to the Cancer New Moon. These few days before and after the New Moon could provide a pocket of energy that feels very different than the rest of the month. The New Moon in Cancer is opposing (180°) Pluto, which normally might result in power struggles, competition, and even aggression. However, the New Moon and Pluto are both in supportive aspects to Neptune, which is powerfully placed in its home sign of Pisces. Specifically, Neptune is trine (120°) to the New Moon and sextile (60°) Pluto. If we consciously choose to access the compassionate and spiritual energy of Neptune, any tendency toward Plutonian power struggles is much less likely to happen.
The New Moon is also a time during July when our ability to access our intuition is heightened. The New Moon is in Cancer and Neptune is in Pisces. Cancer, Pisces, the Moon, and Neptune are all associated with increased intuitive abilities. In fact, given the supportive aspects to Neptune, we may find that all these aforementioned Urananian changes could go more smoothly than we ever dreamed possible. Especially if any actions that we take feel “inspired,” are based on Neptune’s energy of compassion and charity, and also tap into the heart-centered energy of Mars in Leo (see previous discussion).
Therefore, this is an important time to pay attention to our emotions and any intuitive messages that we receive. Given Pluto’s strong involvement in the New Moon, these messages are especially important if they address anything that needs to be cleared out in order to make room for new energy. Pluto’s energy is to help us discern between what is important and what has outlived its usefulness. This could involve almost anything in our lives:
- This could be physical things, like clearing out clutter or getting rid of old stuff that no longer serves us.
- This clearing out process could involve processing and releasing emotions from our bodies, such as letting go of resentments. As mentioned earlier, our feelings may play an important role right now by providing helpful guidance.
- It may be that we need to change some of our mental patterns or habits of thought. This would be an excellent time to make sure we are effectively using the Law of Attraction to create what we want in our lives.
- It could be that we need to clear our energy system/aura. Given Uranus is in earthy Taurus, this might be a good time to receive an energy healing, massage, go into nature and “hug a tree,” or just use our bodies in ways that allow for the release of any stagnant energy.
- Another possibility is that we need to explore whether we have a good balance between our personal needs and social responsibilities. The Moon in Cancer puts a spotlight on our personal needs. It may be time to review our obligations and make sure that they are still our responsibility and/or match our current needs and desires.
The powerhouse fixed t-square may also be softened around the time of the Cancer New Moon because Mars (which is part of the t-square) will be in a close conjunct (0°) to Venus. The planet of love will provide increased compassion and harmony. We may also feel a desire to love and be loved. Venus can increase our sensitivity, which may help us tune into those emotions and intuitive messages that may be coming our way. Unfortunately, with both Venus and Mars in Leo, there is the possibility of increased drama, especially in our interpersonal relationships and where we invest our hearts. However, we can consciously choose to avoid going in that direction and, instead, focus on using the higher expressions of Venus’s energy, such as being diplomatic, loving, and gentle with those around us (and with ourselves).
On Sunday, July 11, Mercury moves out of Gemini and into Cancer where it will remain until July 29. During this 2.5-week period, our thoughts (Gemini) will be influenced by our emotions (Cancer), which can result in a lack of objectivity. It will help if we can find ways to allow our intuition to be part of our “thinking through process.” Our mental focus during this time will likely shift to our home, family, and security needs.
Then on Thursday, July 15, Chiron will begin its next retrograde phase, which will go all the way to December 15. Chiron is currently traveling through the sign of Aries, which means we are taking actions (Aries) to heal ourselves (Chiron). However, while in retrograde, our efforts to address our areas of greatest vulnerability may involve turning inward. For example, we may benefit from doing some inner child work during this time. We also may feel drawn to explore and discover who we really are and what we have to offer the world, which can increase our level of self-confidence.
Overall, this Cancer New Moon is a pocket of time when we have the potential to use our emotions and our intuition to provide us with guidance as we navigate the rather chaotic energy of the Mars-Saturn-Uranus t-square during July. We need to avoid taking actions that are based on the needs of our ego and, instead, focus on heart-centered choices. A good sign that our ego is in the driver’s seat is when we become reactive, especially if we don’t feel we are being respected or appreciated. If this happens, it’s a good time to take a step back and breathe! Additionally, we are all well-advised to listen carefully to any intuitive guidance (e.g., our “gut”), especially if those messages involve letting go of something that is no longer serving us. It’s likely that it is holding us back from moving forward and evolving as a soul. If letting something go leads to greater feelings of peace, then this is likely confirmation from the fairies of the Universe that we are on the right track.
