In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 10:32 a.m. on Monday, July 20. This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun in conjunction (0°) at 29° of Cancer. To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 29° of Cancer in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.
If you feel like you recently read something about a New Moon in Cancer, you did! As was explained in the Moon Update on June 20, that was the first of two Cancer New Moons that we were going to experience this year. The first Cancer New Moon was extra powerful because it was a Solar Eclipse and coincided with the solstice. Additionally, that New Moon was located at 0° of Cancer, which is the “critical degree” that often coincides with powerful new beginnings.
This second Cancer New Moon is occurring at 29° of Cancer. As is true of all New Moons, this one represents opportunities for new emotional starts in the sign involved. Although new beginnings are typical with any New Moon, there are several indicators that this Cancer New Moon will actually coincide with endings and culminations. For example, 29° is also considered a “critical degree,” but 29° often indicates powerful endings. Therefore, it’s likely that whatever is ending now is related to a powerful new beginning.
As we discussed in the update for the Cancer New Moon on June 20, the higher expression of Cancer includes being nurturing, family-oriented, emotional, and intuitive. The lower expression can lead to being moody, “crabby,” overly protective, dependent, and fearful. Cancer does have to do with the past, so it may be that we are ending something that is related to the past. Or, there may be issues from the past that are coming up now to be understood in a new and deeper way (e.g., family roots, historical influences, people or events from our past).
Cancer is a water sign, and the Cancer New Moon is often considered a time when there will be heightened emotions, creativity, and intuition. Security and safety needs may be very “present,” which may cause us to withdraw into our home base for a little while . . . like a crab pulling into its shell when threatened by something external. We may be questioning the needs and motives of both ourselves and others. It’s important now to work with our emotions and intuitive hunches, as well as put extra emphasis on caring for and nurturing both ourselves and others.
Even if this Cancer New Moon wasn’t falling on a critical degree, this would be a super-charged New Moon. The Sun and Moon in Cancer are both in oppositions to Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto in Capricorn, with all three in retrograde. The influence of those planets in Capricorn cannot be underestimated. We’ve been talking about them for some time now, and they are telling us that information may be revealed (Pluto) that causes us to re-evaluate one or more structures in our lives (Saturn). These three planets give us all a great deal of energy to handle any major projects and to achieve concrete results.
The oppositions (180°) between the Sun and Moon in emotional Cancer and our threesome of planets in earthly Capricorn could result in a feeling of inner conflict. Although we may be feeling ready for a new beginning, we first need to finish the ending. It’s like when we were kids and we wanted to go out to play but our parents told us we had to clean our room first. We emotionally may feel ready for the new beginning, but all the Capricorn energy reminds us that we need to clean things up in order to have a solid foundation upon which to move forward. The Cap energy can be helpful, but it can also feel like it’s filled with rules and limitations that lead to us feeling like it’s raining on our impending parade.
Additional fuel for impatience may come from a square (90°) between Mercury and a conjunction (0°) between Mars and Chiron. We need to be careful of our words around the time of the New Moon because disagreements could occur. For just a few days around the New Moon, we could be feeling irritable and cranky, which can lead to saying the wrong thing. We may also feel like our thoughts are racing, which makes it harder to be reasonable or engage in healthy conversation. This is further evidence for why it might be best to retreat into our home base for a little bit right around the time of the New Moon.
But we won’t have to wait long for our parade to bet started. On Wednesday, July 22, the Sun will move out of Cancer and into Leo for a month-long stay. During this month, we all get to express our individuality and shine. We often feel more creative and playful when the Sun is in Leo. We feel drawn to things that help us enjoy life and express ourselves. We may even feel ready to take a risk, although we do need to be careful not to become self-centered or egotistical. But this is a time when whatever we want to create should take center stage, which may include what you’ve been longing to start. Our creativity is enhanced if we can allow our inner children to play. It is then that we have the most to give back to the world.
Finally, on Monday, July 27, the second of three important sextiles (60°) occurs between Jupiter and Neptune. The first was on February 20, and the last will occur on October 12. Given Jupiter is closely conjunct Pluto right now, this means that Pluto is also part of this equation. There are several ways to interpret this. It could be that expansive (Jupiter) changes (Pluto) will allow us to connect with Spirit (Neptune) more fully or perhaps give back to humanity in a more concrete (Capricorn) way. Normally, Pluto and Neptune can both be related with fears, but this sweet, supportive sextile should help us shift our focus from fear to faith and to trust in the Divine Order of everything.
Overall, this Cancer New Moon is the second of two Cancer New Moons this year. It will likely be a time when we are dealing with the end of a structure of some kind (e.g., family, home, property) that will lead to a new beginning. Whatever insights were gained during the first New Moon on June 20 are likely to be the focus of the ending with this second New Moon on July 20. However, as is often true when looking back at eclipses, sometimes the ending will feel unexpected or forced on us in some way. This can make adjusting to the change more difficult, unless we remember that all is Divinely Orchestrated to meet our spiritual needs. Although there are likely many details to be ironed out, it will likely be easier to move forward now that Mercury is moving direct again (as of July 11). Around the time of the New Moon, it will be helpful to remember to focus on listening to your emotions, trusting intuitive hunches, and proceeding at a pace that allows ourselves (including our inner child) to feel safe. Rest assured that the new beginning is coming!
