In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 1:50 a.m. on Friday, April 5. This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun in conjunction (0°) at 16° of Aries. To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 16° of Aries in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.
New Moons always provide us with opportunities for new emotional starts and setting new intentions in the areas associated with the sign. This time, we are focused on the sign of Aries. The higher expression of this cardinal fire sign includes being assertive, initiating, enthusiastic, confident, and fun-loving. The lower expression can result in us being competitive, impulsive, impatient, and aggressive. The energy of Aries is often described as the positive and not-so-positive traits of a child. There is often a sense of restlessness and impatience because we want to grow up fast. However, maturity has its drawbacks, so we should enjoy this youthful energy while it’s here.
What is interesting about this Aries New Moon is that it’s occurring at a time when there’s a great deal of serious, mature energy in other areas of the chart. This could support or challenge the younger Aries energy . . . and probably both!
- At the time of the New Moon, we have the Sun/Moon in Aries squaring (90°) Saturn, Pluto, and the South Node, all of which are conjunct (0°) in Capricorn. Capricorn is the realist. It can provide us with a sense of responsibility, discipline, and maturity, but it can also be a major downer to the Aries’ youthful enthusiasm.
- We also have Mercury, Venus, and Neptune all conjunct (0°) in Pisces. Pisces is the idealist. It activates our compassion, emotional energy, and intuition. It is the 12th sign of the Zodiac, and it has been described as the wisdom and perspective learned as we travel through the other astrological signs. However, it can also be hard to pin down, foggy-thinking, and play the victim or martyr.
During March, we had a great deal of Piscean energy flowing through our lives. This brought with it a lot of intuitive insights, creativity, or spirituality. However, because Mercury was retrograde in Pisces for most of the month, we may have found it hard to express any of these new ideas that were coming to us through these watery channels. The good news is that Aries energy is becoming present during April. Additionally, Mercury is now direct (as of March 28). It’s likely that we can move all of those great but hard-to-express ideas into Aries “action mode” and leave the Piscean fogginess of March behind us.
But not entirely. As you’ve seen above, there are 3 planets that are still in the watery sign of Pisces. What is different? We can now use the clarity of Mercury direct and the energy of Aries to assertively take action (Aries) to bring our creative, intuitive ideas into formation (Pisces). The Aries energy will help us to be courageous and move beyond any tendencies toward playing the victim or the martyr. And with the influence of Pisces, we may be able to have needed conversations or make changes in a compassionate and graceful way rather than with the sometimes abrupt, self-centered energy of Aries.
But let’s not forget the influence of Capricorn. Given the square (90°) between the planets in Aries (Sun/Moon) and the planets/point in Capricorn (Saturn, Pluto, South Node), we will likely be seeing a turning point of some kind. We might need to take a serious look at our responsibilities. The Capricorn/Saturn influence may slow us down or put a damper on the enthusiasm of the Aries/New Moon energy, but this is not done to be mean or contrary. It’s done to make sure that we are headed where we want to go and taking actions that will get us to our desired destination. If we do experience delays, we need to avoid interpreting this as a “sign” that we are on the wrong path. It may be the right one, but the Fairies of the Universe have to slow us down sometimes while they get the pieces of the puzzle in place for ultimate success. Saturn/Capricorn teaches us all the P-word . . . patience!
However, the conjunct (0°) between Pluto and the South Node is particularly important to mention. The entire month of April will be influenced by this important aspect. Pluto is known for uncovering hard truths that often involve the misuse of power, and the South Node (especially when located in Capricorn) focuses on the lessons we have learned (or should have learned) from the past. Both personally and collectively, it’s very likely that something from the past that was previously hidden will be brought into awareness. It will require that we “face the truth” and perhaps re-balance the power between two people or things. Pluto is telling us that transformation is at hand, even though the transformational process might be a bit messy. We all are being asked to grow into the North Node in Cancer, which is in opposition (180°) to Pluto and the South Node in Capricorn. In sum, we need to expand our awareness and come from a loving place that recognizes that we are all part of the same family . . . the human race.
One final note: Since March 28 when Mercury went direct, we have been going through one of those unique time periods when there were no planets in retrograde. On Wednesday, April 10, this will change when Jupiter begins its annual retrograde period, which will continue through mid-August. And Jupiter is just the first of several planets that will be changing into retrograde over the next month or two (e.g., Saturn & Pluto change direction the beginning of May). Although it will not stop entirely, we may feel like recent expansion slows down while Jupiter is in retrograde. But perhaps more importantly, this is often a time when we focus on reevaluating our beliefs and ethical standards. This will be particularly true with this 2019 retrograde period because Jupiter is located in its home sign of Sagittarius. Much has changed over the last few months, so it makes sense that we would need time to go inward and decide how we feel about the changes and make adjustments in how we view things in our lives, both personally and on a societal level. Jupiter also has to do with learning, so we may need to learn something new in order to keep growing and advancing on our spiritual path.
Overall, any Aries New Moon is often a time when we need to become more self-sufficient. This year, we need to look at our own needs and then use the influence of Pisces to compassionately take care of ourselves and express our needs. The strong Capricorn energy tells us that whatever we do, we need to be responsible and be our own knight in shining armor. But given the strong influence of the conjunct between Pluto and the South Node, we may need to face some unpleasant, previously hidden truths in order to move forward. This aspect is all about re-balancing the power in our relationships. When taken as a whole, this New Moon will likely be a mixture of great potential and some challenges. Because many of these planetary aspects and positions are pretty stable, all of this will, to a large extent, influence us for the entire 2-week period. In sum, April represents a time for us to be responsible, step up, face the music, and get something handled in our lives . . . and in our society, too. Let’s all do our best to use the influence of Capricorn/Saturn to be patient and to take any indicated actions using Piscean compassion and sensitivity.
