New Moon in Virgo

In the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 6:56 p.m. on Monday, September 2.  This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun conjunct (0°) at 11°03’ of Virgo.  To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 11°03’ of Virgo in your birth/natal chart.  The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.  (NOTE:  Click here to learn how to find the transiting Moon in your chart.)

All New Moons provide us with an opportunity for a new emotional start in the areas associated with the sign.  This time, we are focusing on Virgo:

  • The higher expression of this sign includes being analytical, practical, efficient, precise, clean, health conscious, and humble.  This is the sign often associated with healing and healers.
  • The lower expression can lead to being overly perfectionistic or picky.  It may also cause us to want to withdraw and isolate (in an unhealthy way) if we don’t feel safe and/or in control of our lives.

Virgo is a mutable earth sign.  Mutable energy is adaptable.  Earth signs are grounded, reliable, and responsible.  Combine these two, and this means that if something needs to change, we will move forward in a new direction, as long as it is practical and sensible.  Virgo loves things to be organized.  Consequently, this sign can be adaptable, but it often feels more relaxed when everything is planned, under control, and all the details have been taken care of.  If not, we can feel anxious, which usually will cause us to revert to the lower expression of Virgo’s energy (e.g., perfectionism, unhealthy withdrawal).

Each year’s Virgo New Moon often is a time when we suddenly feel a need to de-clutter.  This can include our physical space, but also our minds, our bodies, our work activities, and even our daily habits.  Because Virgo is an earth sign, focusing on what our bodies need in order to thrive is particularly important.  We should take this opportunity to tune inward and let our bodies tell us what we need more of or less of.  This may be a time when we renew our commitment to take care of ourselves, especially if that improves our health.  Even if what we do would be considered “baby steps,” that’s fine!  This is a good time to make some lifestyle changes and do whatever is needed to put our lives in order (or at least more order).

Virgo is one of the signs that is focused on service to others, which can be within our family, our work environment, or volunteer activities.  This is a time of year when we often feel a need to giving humbly, without the need for as much recognition as we might usually need or expect.  It may also be time to review our relationship to work and service in order to determine if we have outgrown where we have been devoting our time and energy.  We may decide that it’s time to move in a new direction.

At the time of the New Moon, the Sun and Moon in Virgo are both opposing (180°) Saturn in Pisces, which is currently in retrograde.  Saturn represents our responsibilities, and Pisces is the sign of compassion.  This again emphasizes the need to spend time around the New Moon reflecting on what service might mean to us at this point in our lives because that may have shifted.  Where we put our time and energy needs to be in alignment with our values, needs, and goals.  If we aren’t going in a direction aligned with our soul, then Saturn has been known to slow down our progress by bringing us challenges or obstacles.

As mentioned above, Saturn is currently traveling through Pisces.  This means that Virgo’s motivation to be of service is intertwined with our spiritual beliefs.  In fact, service may become integrated into our life as a form of spiritual practice and as a way to express our soul’s mission or essence on the Earth plane.  This could include an increasingly clear understanding that we are all one and that what is done to one person is done to all.

Although the inner work associated with Virgo is often quiet, don’t underestimate the power of this year’s Virgo New Moon.  At the time of this lunar event, Venus in Libra is in an out-of-sign opposition (180°) to Neptune in Pisces.  Both Venus and Neptune are squaring (90°) Mars in Gemini, and the square between Mars and Neptune is exact (orb of only 0°04’).  This forms one of those t-squares that we often talk about (i.e., right triangle), with Mars as the focal planet and the exact square makes it even more powerful.

Mars is the planet of action and energy.  Given Mars is in Gemini, it means that communication will play a prominent role of this Virgo New Moon.  However, Virgo is a quiet, inner-oriented sign.  Therefore, communication around this time may take the form of a lot of inner thought and reflection rather than outward communication.  Also, Venus is conjunct (0°) the South Node in Libra and Neptune is conjunct (0°) the North Node in Aries.  Consequently, our thinking might focus on how our relationships (South Node in Libra) need to change so we can courageously live a more authentic present (North Node in Aries).

Luckily, support for change and transformation is provided by a close trine (120°) between Uranus and Pluto, both of which are in sweet sextiles (60°) to Neptune in its home sign of Pisces. This minor triangle configuration provides support for us to make the adjustments needed to be aligned with our spiritual work in this lifetime, but only if we are willing to do the inner exploration needed to figure out what that work is.

Further support is provided by an exact trine (120°) between Mercury and Chiron.  This beautifully supports us in aligning our mind with the lessons we are here to learn in this lifetime.  Those lessons are often associated with past wounds/trauma, which typically create our areas of greatest vulnerability.  Around the time of the New Moon, we may find we are better able to articulate, at least to ourselves, what we need in order to heal.

Planetary movements & political influences

NOTE:  I typically avoid mentioning politics in my updates.  As you’ll see below, I do mention it this time.  I’m truly not taking sides.  My job is simply to analyze the current energetic influences, and there are definitely some interesting indicators that seem aligned with some recent political events.  Additionally, as mentioned in the last Moon Update, I may refer to the USA, but many countries around the world are currently going through periods of transition and political changes.

The day before the Virgo New Moon (Sunday, September 1), Uranus begins its annual 5-month retrograde phase.  This could slow down some of the changes that we are thinking about making.  They may take more time than expected, or it could be that some changes need to wait until Uranus goes direct on January 30, 2025.  All retrogrades result in our attention being drawn inward to explore the qualities associated with the planet.  With Uranus in Taurus, we may find that certain basic “structures” in our life or in society (Taurus) need to evolve in order to increase our sense of freedom and individuality (Uranus).  We are definitely being asked to explore what freedom means for us, especially when it comes to autonomy over our bodies, lifestyle choices, and even our housing.  I do find it interesting how these are some of the predominant political issues being discussed in the USA.  It’s also interesting to note that this retrograde period straddles USA’s November 5 Election Day.  (NOTE:  For more information about retrogrades, see my Blog post Planets in Retrograde.)

The same day (Sunday, September 1), retrograde Pluto leaves Aquarius and back-tracks one last time into Capricorn.  It will remain there until November 20 (about 2.5 months), after which it will return to Aquarius until 2044.  Capricorn is a serious energy, and returning to this sign provides us with a last opportunity to transform any structures in our life in order to be sure they are ready to support our forward movement once Pluto begins to fully express its transformational energy in forward-looking, iconoclastic Aquarius.  I think it is safe to say that over the past few years we have all seen cracks forming in various institutions that have long been seen as stable and reliable.  The Supreme Court in the USA comes to mind.  Once Pluto settles in for a 20 year stay in Aquarius, these changes will propel us into a new and innovative future that will likely focus on Aquarian concepts, such as freedom, individuality, tolerance, and responsibility.  However, Pluto is a very slow-moving planet; therefore, we need to be patient because any transformations, especially to major institutions or structures, may take some time.  Again, I can’t help but see some interesting correlations between Pluto’s movements and the topics being discussed during the USA’s national elections.

Then on Wednesday, September 4, Mars moves out of Gemini and into Cancer, where it will remain until November 4.  Mars isn’t particularly happy in Cancer.  Mars wants to boldly move forward, while Cancer tends to be careful and cautious.  However, Cancer is a cardinal sign, which means it does want to move forward; it just wants to move cautiously.  During this time, we may all feel motivated to do things that increase our perceived sense of safety, whether that is on an emotional or physical level.  If we are unable to do this, then we need to be aware that the lower expression of Mars in Cancer includes becoming very emotional and moody.  If we end up feeling trapped or perceiving that we can’t protect someone or something we love, it can even include behavior that is passive-aggressive or aggressive (remember those Cancer crabs have claws!).  And remember, all of this applies to individuals, groups, and entire countries.  We need to find ways to help ourselves and others feel safe while still moving forward in a positive direction.

As of Wednesday, August 28, Mercury is no longer in retrograde and is moving direct again (yay!).  It is likely that any snarled energy is starting to straighten out and that we are ready to start taking action on any plans we’ve been thinking about for the past 3+ weeks.  Then on Monday, September 9, Mercury will leave dramatic Leo and enter down-to-earth Virgo, where it will remain until September 26.  This will help those plans go more smoothly because our thinking will get more precise, rational, logical, and detail-oriented.  Making decisions becomes easier because we can accurately analyze situations.  Our communication with others benefits from all of this.  However, we do need to be careful not to become so perfectionistic about our thoughts or words that it causes us to freeze up (e.g., the “paralysis of analysis”).  Forward progress is very possible during this time, but only if we can avoid being too picky.

Overall, the time around the Virgo New Moon might best be described as a time of rest and inner reflection.  Without expecting perfection from ourselves or others, we need to use discernment in order to determine appropriate actions or activities.  Virgo tells us that this is best achieved by seeking that sense of stillness and “inner knowingness” about what is “right” for us, regardless of what others think.  Most people find that this is best done in private.  Our bodies are an excellent conveyor of “our truth,” if we take the time to listen to what it’s trying to tell us.  It is likely that some old behaviors, beliefs, activities, or objects need to be cleared out.  This is a great time to de-clutter.  Our goal around the time of the New Moon should be to move closer to aligning all parts of our existence:  body, mind, and spirit.  And one final note:  All of this work is preparatory, because in 2 weeks, we will begin the second of two eclipse seasons in 2024, which usually coincides with major endings and beginnings.  The inner work we do around the time of the Virgo New Moon will help us be ready!
