NEW MOON IN VIRGO & SOLAR ECLIPSE – Is it time to take a leap of faith in order to have a more fulfilling life? (September 12, 2015)

Astrology-New-Moon-Full-MoonIn the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 11:41 p.m. on Saturday, September 12. This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun in conjunction (0°) at 21° of Virgo. To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 21° of Virgo in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.

This New Moon in Virgo is also a partial Solar Eclipse, which makes this New Moon much more powerful. Eclipses are times when the normal stream of electromagnetic energy from the cosmos is cut off, allowing us an opportunity to “reboot” our systems and “reconfigure” our consciousness. For this reason, it’s not surprising that eclipses often mark times of major endings and new beginnings. They open up new pathways and new possibilities. Each New Moon establishes the beginning of a month-long cycle, but the influence of an eclipse is felt for six months. This means that all of the aspects occurring at the time of this New Moon are even more important because they will be influencing us for the next six months. (NOTE: This is the first of two eclipses, with the next one occurring in two weeks with the Full Moon in Aries on September 27-28. Be sure to watch for my next Moon Update about that full Lunar Eclipse.)

As is true of all New Moons, this one brings with it an opportunity to set new intentions in the sign in which it occurs, and the Solar Eclipse simply makes its effects more powerful and long-lasting. Keywords for Virgo include practical, efficient, precise, analytical, organized, clean, and health-conscious. Due to the eclipse energy, we are being asked to explore the highest possible expression of the sign of Virgo. Therefore, we are being asked to use discernment rather than criticism, to focus on what is important rather than be distracted by unnecessary details, and to move toward integration rather than dissection. With the Virgo energy, we become increasingly aware that our body is the vehicle in which our soul travels in this lifetime; therefore, it is as important to maintain as the cars we drive. Virgo is also very focused on service to others as an expression of our Divine essence in the world.

At the time of this New Moon (exact on Friday, September 11), the asteroid Chiron is exactly opposite (180°) the Sun and Moon in Virgo. Chiron is currently in Pisces, which is often a very calming influence. We are being encouraged to soften our hearts, to not be so self-critical (and critical of others), and to connect with our higher self as a way to heal. Healing and compassion are central themes that will be present in our lives for the next six months due to the eclipse. However, this opposition between the New Moon and Chiron will likely kick-start that healing process by exposing our greatest fears or false beliefs, which may leave many of us feeling pretty vulnerable. We are being asked to explore what is holding us back from expressing our true selves and honoring our needs. This may involve exploring new healing modalities that provide a better balance between the practical and spiritual aspects of our lives. We may also find ourselves willing to let go of our need to be in control of every detail and ready to move through life with greater trust, acceptance, and faith.

This New Moon is also occurring during an opposition (180°) between Jupiter and Neptune, which is exact on Wednesday, September 16. Many of us will feel drawn to connect with spiritual realms, and we may long for experiences that confirm our spiritual beliefs. Our ability to tap into Universal wisdom is enhanced now, so listening to our intuition is important. The lower expression of this pairing is a desire to escape or having delusions. We may also have a harder time discerning fact from fantasy, especially on the day the aspect is exact. But if we can keep our feet firmly planted on Mother Earth, while also exploring our spiritual abilities, we have the potential to experience amazing transformations. It may be helpful to spend some time on the 16th of September in spiritual practices such as meditation or journaling. And although everything may feel rather “otherworldly” right now, Saturn’s re-entry into Sagittarius the next day (see later discussion) will likely help us to stay grounded.

Finally, it is also important to note that at the time of the New Moon, Uranus, the planet of change, is in an awkward alignment with the Sun. The aspect is called a quincunx (150°), which is also known as an inconjunct. Everything may feel a bit cattywampus right now. Our plans may be disrupted, and surprising events could cause us to feel out of control in our lives or feel unable to move forward in the direction we would like to take. Due to the involvement of Uranus, many of us may also feel a need to be more independent and non-conforming. Although we realize how much needs to be done, we may be feeling impatient with the routine aspects of our lives and have a strong desire for new experiences and greater freedom. With all quincunxes, it’s important to address both needs and make adjustments when necessary. Luckily, Uranus is currently located in the sign of Aries, which can provide us with the courage to make important adjustments in our lives, especially if the changes enable us to embrace our individuality and live in greater alignment of the truth of our being.

On Thursday, September 17, Mercury will begin its final retrograde period of 2015. As is true of all retrograde periods, our minds will take a break from the external world and will turn inward for a period of reflection, review, reconsideration, reassessment, repair, release . . . all the re-words. And because everyone will be focused inward, the external world may feel like it’s not functioning very smoothly. Be careful to check all written documents carefully, confirm any oral communication to make sure everything was heard correctly, and be patient with miscommunications of all kinds. We all need these periods of reflection because they help us determine what needs our attention. Therefore, use this time to slow down, think differently, and trust your intuition (which isn’t usually impacted by Mercury retrograde). Starting new projects now is not advised; but if unavoidable, do your best to leave some wiggle room for later adjustments once Mercury goes direct on Friday, October 9.

Due to this retrograde phase, Mercury will remain in the sign of Libra three times longer than usual (August 27 to November 1). Libra emphasizes the importance of clear communication in all of our relationships. Particularly during the retrograde phase, we may be reconsidering issues involving fairness and cooperation, which can include reviewing our past agreements to see if everyone’s welfare (including our own) was taken into account. We may also find that we are radically redefining our relationships, roles, and contracts.

Also on Thursday, September 17, Saturn returns to the sign of Sagittarius, which it briefly visited back in December 2014. It is likely that the last nine months, while Saturn was retracing its steps back into Scorpio, have provided powerful opportunities for growth and clarification. If we have done the work of Saturn in Scorpio, we will likely be ready to move forward toward our future goals. Saturn will remain in Sagittarius until December 2017. Given the previously discussed opposition (180°) between Jupiter (which is pushing for expansion) and Neptune (which is all about spirituality), Saturn in Sagittarius may provide us with insights about how we can bring all the spiritual and creative energy of Neptune down to earth in practical ways.

On Tuesday, September 22, a free-flowing trine (120°) between Venus and Uranus will likely help us embrace the new and reduce any fear we have about taking risks. We are ready to experiment (but not necessarily ready to commit). We should focus on creative expression, being around different types of people, and taking time to socialize. Finances could be changing right now, but the positive flow of the trine means it will likely be for the better . . . assuming we don’t take unwise risks.

The next day (Wednesday, September 23), the Sun moves out of exacting Virgo and into balanced Libra for a month-long stay. This also marks the equinox and the change of seasons. This month is all about relationships, compromise, and diplomacy. However, when the Sun is in Libra, decision-making can be challenging due to being able to see all sides of any situation. We need to be careful not to put off important decisions as a way to avoid conflict. As the Sun moves into Libra today, it makes a sweet sextile (60) to Saturn, which will help us feel grounded and stable. It’s easy to stick to the tasks at hand today. Productivity may be slow, but it is steady. Also, we may have an opportunity to collaborate with others who share our vision.

Overall, this New Moon is asking us to focus. We need to seek clarity and concentrate on what is truly important to us. The increased spiritual and intuitive energy continues to flow into our lives this fall, and we may feel it’s time to take a leap of faith into the unknown. With Venus recently turning direct (September 6), we may feel ready to make necessary changes in order to have a more joyful, fulfilling life. However, with Mercury going retrograde, we may need to spend a few weeks rethinking our plans in order to make sure we are on solid footing. Ultimately, many of us are on the brink of making changes that better align us with true our values and priorities. And in the process, we need to honor the needs of our bodies, and remember, “Don’t chase people. Be yourself, do your own thing, and work hard. The right people – the ones who really belong in your life – will come to you. And stay.” (Will Smith)
