NEW MOON IN CANCER – Do you feel it? The time is coming! (July 4, 2016)

Astrology-New-Moon-Full-MoonIn the Pacific Time Zone, the New Moon will occur at 4:00 a.m. on Monday, July 4.  This New Moon finds the Moon and Sun in conjunction (0°) at 13° of Cancer.  To further clarify how this New Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 13° of Cancer in your birth/natal chart.  The issues associated with that house are going to be most influenced by this New Moon’s presence.

A New Moon provides us with an opportunity for a new emotional start, which is particularly true with the watery, emotional sign of Cancer.  Cancer is all about emotions, family, nurturing, and security needs.  The symbol of the crab is perfect for this sign.  Crabs are known for being very protective of those they love.  They will use their claws to pull their “family” close and protect what is theirs.  However, crabs will only use those claws if needed.  They would prefer to move sideways and avoid conflict.  But if needed, they will defend.  And when it comes to what we choose to defend, we need to remember that the family that we were born into isn’t always the family that we choose.  Another characteristic of a Cancer New Moon is the need by some of us to redefine who, how, or what we define as our “family.”  This could include our relationship with our self, others, and/or even the Divine.

And keep in mind that there is a lot of Cancer energy right now.  In addition to the Sun and Moon, Mercury and Venus are also in the sign of the crab.  Additionally, Mars is in Scorpio, and Neptune, the South Node, and Chiron are all in Pisces.  Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are all water signs.  This means that any approach to issues in our lives will need to take into consideration an emotional, intuitive, creative, interdependent, and feminine/receptive approach.  Especially during the first part of July (around the time of the New Moon), it will be helpful to spend time focusing inward on our needs, nurturing ourselves, and taking care of our bodies, minds, and spirits.  This is especially important if we are feeling confused or uncertain about our next step.  We need to turn inward and tune upward (to the Divine) for the answers.

This Cancer New Moon is in opposition (180°) to Pluto, which likely means that the effective use of power (as opposed to force) will be an issue that many of us will be grappling with in the days leading up to and following the New Moon.  Pluto is about the effective use of power to bring about transformation, and if something hasn’t already died, it’s probably overdue.  It is likely that whatever we need to let go of is something that normally provided us with a sense of security.  It’s time to follow our own path and find our own source of inner power.  Remember, Pluto’s energy is about death and then rebirth, as is symbolized by the phoenix rising from the ashes.

Additionally, the Sun and Moon are conjunct (0°) Venus, trine (120°) Neptune, and sextile (60°) Jupiter.  The presence of Neptune means that tapping into our intuition is essential at this time.  Mystical experience may even be possible now, and compassion can be better accessed, both for ourselves and to/from others.  A trine (120°) between Mercury and Neptune on the day after the New Moon (Tuesday, July 5) could mean a day in which words will be more compassionate than usual.  In sum, all of this could have an unexpected positive effect.  Although we may have been feeling a lot of trepidation previously, an easier-than-expected ending of some kind is possible now.  With Neptune in retrograde, the shadows may not seem as dark as they usually appear.  And with Mars moving direct as of June 29, we are being provided with the courage that may have been harder to access during the first part of 2016.  However, given the strong Cancer influence, we will need to find a balance between the felt need to protect (and possibly retreat) and consciously accessing that courage to forge ahead.

And if all of that weren’t enough, the New Moon is also in a difficult aspect to Saturn.  It is called a quincunx (150°).  This could require us to make some emotional and/or structural adjustments in order for this long-awaited change to occur.  But again, with Mars now moving direct, we have the energy and courage to pull ourselves out of any fearful thoughts and assertively move forward toward our dreams, if we consciously choose to do so.  Our goal now should be to use all the insights and re-direction that was provided while Mars was in retrograde in order to determine where we want to go and how we are going to get there.  Cancer is a very personal sign, so whatever we do must match up with our personal emotions and goals.  We cannot live someone else’s dreams now.  Remember that there are no “right” answers . . . just what is “right” for each of us at this point in time.  But in order to have achieve our long-term goals, we may need to give up something in the short-run or take an entirely unexpected path.

A note about Mars moving direct:  As Mars slowly regains its forward momentum, any changes may seem a bit spotty or awkward at first.  However, movement is going to happen and the momentum will build.  An acceleration of this pace will likely occur in mid-August when Mars moves back over the degree at which it started to move retrograde.

Between Thursday, June 30, and Saturday, July 16, a series of planets will form cardinal t-squares (right triangles) with the still present square (90°) between Uranus and Pluto.  This is the square that strongly influenced us between 2012-2015, and it will continue to be present to a lesser extent through 2020.  Whenever a planet moves into a position that forms one of these t-squares, it will reactive the Uranus-Pluto square.  With three planets doing this within about 2 weeks, this just adds even more certainty to the idea that change (Uranus) and transformation (Pluto) are inevitable.  So when you combine (a) these t-squares and (b) Mars moving direct again as of June 29, it increases the chances that we will be feeling the winds of change in a big way.  For example, if we’ve been sitting on the fence about something, it is likely that we can no longer do so.  For some, we may not even recognize our lives by the time we get to the end of July or the end of the summer.

Luckily, all of this change is supported by a series of grand trines (equilateral triangles) that are formed between Thursday, June 30, and Friday, July 22.  Without analyzing each one (which would be a very lengthy process), trust that these are very supportive configurations that are going to provide us with an opportunity to courageously own our power and let go of what is no longer serving us (Mars in Scorpio) and heal deep wounds in the process (Chiron in Pisces).  This may require that we identify what it is that we truly want or desire and clear away any misperceptions.  But the grand trines will support us in doing all of this . . . and a whole lot more.

A series of transits between July 6-10 will likely influence all this changing energy:

  • Wednesday, July 6, sees a trine (120°) between Venus and Mars. This could support the sharing of feelings and provide us with the courage to show our love for person, place, or thing.  This will have a very positive influence on all close relationships and financial endeavors.
  • The next day (Thursday, July 7) could be more challenging in our relationships. Both the Sun and Mercury will be in opposition (180°) to Pluto, and Venus will be squaring (90°) Uranus.  We may see a sudden and unexpected change in direction regarding what we desire.  Some dark, pessimistic thoughts could start to come to the surface; but, this is an important day to use all our spiritual skills in order to redefine problems as challenges, love ourselves and others unconditionally, and learn when the best action is to let go and let God.
  • Luckily, a trine (120°) between Venus and Chiron the next day (Friday, July 8), will help us heal emotional issues, if we are willing to do so.
  • Saturday, July 9, brings a sweet sextile (60°) between the Sun and Jupiter. This will add a sense of hopefulness and might bring positive recognition for our efforts.  We are able to present our ideas in a favorable way, and we are tolerant and generous.  Self-confidence and a stronger sense of self are gifts of this aspect, as is the ability to see “the big picture.”
  • On Sunday, July 10, a trine (120°) between Mercury and Mars provides us with the ability to use our words constructively to move forward. This is a day when enthusiastic and energetic communication will support increased productivity.  We can easily turn our ideas into workable projects, and our minds are clear and quick.  The only downside is that we may not pay attention to our own emotions or the emotions of others.  Hopefully the continued presence of so much emotional Cancer energy will counter this tendency.

On Monday, July 11, Venus enters Leo, where it will remain until August 6.  Our hearts will be warmed by the loving energy of Venus in Leo.  We may feel very generous with those we love and possibly receive validation or recognition.  The shadow side of this placement can be a need for adoration, a sense of pridefulness, or being overly dramatic.  But if we can focus on giving love from a place of non-attachment, the next three weeks could be a time filled with wonderful undercurrents of warm, loving energy.

Just two days later, (Wednesday, July 13), Mercury follows Venus into Leo, where it will remain until the end of July.  So now our hearts (Venus) and our minds (Mercury) are aligned with love.  Theatrical speech is possible now, as is talking more than listening.  But our thinking will be confident, and it’s likely that we have our eye on the prize (think of that lion eyeing its prey)!  Just keep in mind that no matter how big our goals are, we need to keep track of the details along the way that will support us in achieving our dreams.

Overall, the time of this New Moon in Cancer is a pretty pivotal moment in our personal history.  We need to find a balance between turning inward to take care of our needs and using all the supportive energy swirling around us to take courageous steps forward on our path.  The time right around the New Moon (July 1-7) may be the best time to relax, meditate, reflect, and tune into our intuition.  The intuitive guidance we receive during this time will likely help us see what steps to take in the days following the New Moon.  But keep in mind that the turn inward may show us that the timing isn’t quite right (yet) or that important adjustments are needed in order to be truly successful in reaching our long-term goal.  However, with so many indicators of change in the planets right now, movement forward is likely.  It’s no longer a matter of if, just when!  So now would be a good time to remember that “Sometimes our lives have to be completely shaken up, changed, and rearranged to relocate us to the place we’re meant to be” (Unknown).
