FULL MOON IN LIBRA AND LUNAR ECLIPSE – An exact cardinal grand cross means radical change is almost inevitable! (April 15, 2014)

Astrology New Moon Full MoonIn the Pacific Time Zone, the Moon will be full at 12:42 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15.  With this Full Moon, the Sun in Aries will be in opposition (180°) to the Moon in Libra.  To further clarify how this Full Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 26° of Aries and 26° of Libra in your birth/natal chart.  The issues associated with those two houses are going to be most impacted by this Full Moon’s presence.

As we discussed in the last Moon Update on March 30, we are in the midst of what is likely to be the most important time period of 2014.  There is so much going on during the next two weeks that it is going to be very difficult to cover anything in much detail.  Additionally, to avoid an overly lengthy blog post, I am going to have to skip over some of the more “minor” events, even though during normal periods of time, they would be important.  So bear with me as I try to succinctly describe how to effectively surf the waves of what is likely to be a very important time period in our lives and in the lives of those around us.

To start things off, we have the Full Moon in Libra on Tuesday, April 15.  Full Moons are always times when we are asked to reassess the goals and intentions that we set at the time of the last New Moon, and we are often asked to find balance between the issues associated with the two signs involved.  In this case, the signs are Aries and Libra.  The Aries-Libra axis has to do with relationships . . . relationship to self (Aries) and relationships with others (Libra).  With Aries, we are being asked to find avenues for independence and assertiveness.  With Libra, we are being asked to find ways to work together harmoniously. Successfully navigating a Full Moon means paying attention to both ends of this axis.

Full Moons in Libra often coincide with times when we have to face important issues inside our relationships, which is definitely true with this year’s Full Moon.  This may involve facing the fact that it’s time to move on because a relationship or partnership has outlived its usefulness and is no longer a “vibrational match.”  However, it is just as likely that this Full Moon could clarify that it’s time to make adjustments to an existing relationship in order for it to remain vital and healthy.  Or we could clearly see that now is the time to take a risk by getting closer to someone or perhaps forming a partnership that is mutually beneficial.  To help clarify where you need to make adjustments, you might ask yourself, “Where do I need to be brave and work independently?” and “Where do I need to join with others in order to be more powerful?”

But this Full Moon in Libra is also a total Lunar Eclipse.  Every six months, the orbits of the Sun, Moon, and Earth align and form an eclipse.  The eclipse interrupts the flow of electromagnetic energy toward Earth.  During these times, it is believed that Mother Earth and all of its inhabitants have an opportunity to “reboot” and “upgrade” our levels of consciousness.  Old programs can be more easily erased.  New pathways become available.  Higher dimensions become more accessible.  Eclipses mark important turning points and opportunities to advance on our evolutionary journey.  We see things in a different light.  And with a Lunar Eclipse, the blockage of light stirs up our unconscious, which can increase our awareness of our deepest motivations and fears.  Good questions to ask now are “What do I really want?” and “What is holding me back?

NOTE:  For those in North and South America, you may be able to view this full Lunar Eclipse in clear skies.  For best viewing, look online for the exact time period of the eclipse in your local area.

And if all of that wasn’t enough, on the same day as the Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse (Tuesday, April 15), Pluto turns retrograde, which will continue until September.  Given the very slow moving nature of Pluto, the impact of this change in direction will be both gradual and subtle.  When in retrograde, Pluto reinforces the letting go of anything that is old, outdated, or obsolete in our lives.  This can include external things (e.g., objects, relationships), but Pluto’s focus is often internal (e.g., attitudes, thinking, communication patterns).  Pluto retrograde is also an excellent time for regenerative activities, such as changes to exercise or dietary patterns.  A key word during this time is renewal, so going on retreats (even for a few hours) or receiving healing energy may also be helpful.

It is also helpful to know that around the time of the Full Moon, Mercury (the planet of communication) will be very active.  The day before the Full Moon (Monday, April 14), Mercury will square (90°) Jupiter.  Then, Mercury conjoins (0°) Uranus the very next day (Tuesday, April 15).  These two aspects could leave us on “information overload.”  However, the presence of Uranus means that we will also be able to “think outside the box.”  We need to be free to explore all options without the need to produce immediate or practical results, so this is a particularly good time to engage in brainstorming.  Just be aware that on Wednesday, April 16, Mercury will be in opposition (180°) to Mars, which may be a time when words (written and oral) can come out more forcefully than intended.  However, this aspect will make our thinking unusually sharp, and this may help us sort through all our available options and reach some much-needed conclusions.

And then on Saturday, April 19, the Sun moves out of fiery, active Aries and into the mellower earth sign of Taurus.  Although the idea of anything “mellow” may sound very appealing right now, the Sun in Taurus can also be slow moving and resistant to change.  And this slower energy may actually make it more difficult to navigate the waves of change coming our way.  The Taurean energy is saying “slow down” and “focus on security needs.”  However, that may not be possible for any of us, at least not until the early- or mid-part of May, because . . .

All of the above is happening during the time of a rare exact cardinal grand cross.  Although it will be at its most exact on Wednesday, April 23, this extremely powerful configuration will be impacting many of us for several weeks before and several weeks after the actual event.  Additionally, the planets involved will be forming a series of exact aspects beginning on Sunday, April 20 and continuing into Wednesday, April 23.  April 20-23 is a very powerful time period!

Let me try to explain all of this as clearly as possible, both for students of astrology and for non-students.  Beginning early this year, three planets (i.e., Jupiter, Uranus, Pluto) have been forming a tense formation called a t-square.  This is where 2 planets are in opposition (180°) to each other (i.e., Jupiter and Pluto), and both of these planets are squaring (90°) a third planet (i.e., Uranus).  This forms a right triangle.  We have discussed this t-square in several Moon Updates.  In a nutshell, t-squares are often times of major turning points.  Given the planets involved, power struggles, letting go of past hurts, and/or dealing with deeply hidden fears are all possibilities.  On an individual and societal level, humanity is being urged to move toward a world that understands that there is a difference between the use of power and the use of force.

Cardinal Grand Cross 2014 (2)During the month of April, the t-square is still there but Mars will join this configuration to form what is called a grand cross (or grand square).  At this point, I feel a picture is worth a thousand words, so here is an astrological chart depicting the cardinal grand cross.  Although you may not understand all the symbols (i.e., glyphs), you can see that in the center of this chart, there is a cross.  We already have the t-square with Jupiter, Uranus, and Pluto.  Now Mars is moving into a position to make a cross in the sky above us.  This is actually the second of three times these four planets will join together like this.  The first was in December 25-30, and the next one will form between June 14-25.

However, with this second of three cardinal grand crosses, all four of these planets will be at 13° (some astrologers round up to 14°) on Wednesday, April 23.  Having a grand cross this exact is a very rare event.  When explaining a grand cross, I always use the analogy of a mobile, like you would hang over a baby’s crib.  All four ends of the mobile (i.e., grand cross) need to be in balance.  If one end is given too much weigh or not enough weigh, then the entire mobile will go cattywampus.  Whenever you have a grand cross, it’s as if you have 4 planets that are battling for supremacy . . . or at least attention.  And given that all of those planets have valid viewpoints, none of them can be ignored.

So what does all this mean?  Since 2012, we’ve had Uranus and Pluto forming a series of seven exact squares (90°).  And lately, Jupiter has joined them to form the t-square described above.  And now Mars has been added to form a grand cross.  Mars is the planet of action, courage, and adventure.  By adding Mars to an already tense and volatile t-square, it’s like lighting a fuse that is likely to “ignite” any changes that need to be made now.  The beauty of astrology is that you know in advance that this is coming, which gives us all a better chance of successfully navigating this time period.

So how can we approach this time period and gain from it?  Understanding the pieces of the puzzle is key!  Within a grand cross, there are 2 oppositions (180°), and oppositions always require balance.  This grand cross involves the following areas of our lives:  self-identity and independence (Aries), relationships and diplomacy (Libra), home life and security needs (Cancer), and work and responsibilities (Capricorn).  And within this grand cross, we need to find balance between courage (Mars), collaboration (Libra), ingenuity (Uranus), and integrity (Jupiter).  Additionally, we need to be prepared for change because all four of these astrological signs are cardinal signs, which means they represent new beginnings and the energy to take action on those new phases of development.

Additionally, grand crosses also include 4 squares (90°), and squares always represent turning points.  Squares create tension.  They force us to deal with issues that we normally might ignore or minimize.  Whatever has been pushed down will come up now to be healed.  The good news is that if we are courageous enough to face these issues, our lives could be transformed forever.  To paraphrase the AstroTwins, you can think of this cardinal grand cross like a cleanse . . . the process may not be fun, but you’ll come out on the other side of it happier, healthier, and perhaps even glowing with new internal light!

So to summarize, in order to find the balance required by the oppositions, the squares are demanding that we change.  This may not be easy because the changes may require the breakdown of longstanding patterns, beliefs, or even relationships.  And remember, even if change is not occurring in our life, we may be impacted by the radical changes occurring in the lives of those around us or in society as a whole.  Regardless, our job should be to become the eye in the middle of the hurricane.  Each person is different, but some suggested coping mechanisms might include meditating, spending time in nature, and reaching out to like-minded, supportive others.

Finally, on Wednesday, April 23, Mercury moves out of Aries and into Taurus, where it will remain until May 8.  Given all the volatile energy of the last few days, this Taurean energy may feel like a breath of fresh air.  Our thinking will begin to slow down and become more grounded and solid.  Common sense will be more readily accessible.  The only caution is to not allow our thinking to become narrow, rigid, or conservative, which could derail the changes that need to occur now.  Yes, now is a good time to think things through, but don’t allow yourself to talk yourself out of future changes just so you can feel secure in the present.

Overall, this Full Moon in Libra is asking us to examine our relationships in order to make sure that there is a healthy balance between “me” and “us.”  And although the cardinal grand cross will likely create tension, it does provide us with gifts.  It is creating amazing opportunities to prioritize and even experience a major breakthrough or turning point in our lives.  At this time, we can more clearly see what is working and what is not working in our lives.  And because Uranus is involved, radical change is almost inevitable now, in one or more areas of our lives, in the lives of those around us, and within society.  Uranus energy is only difficult to handle if you resist it, so you can choose to change or be changed.  Be as adaptable and flexible as possible.  The birthing of this “new you” will be a lot easier if you flow with the contractions and don’t try to stop them.  So remember, “The Universe is saying: Allow me to flow through you unrestricted, and you will see the greatest magic you have ever seen” (Klaus Joehle).
