Full Moon in Cancer

In the Pacific Time Zone, the Moon will be full at 8:53 p.m. on Sunday, January 4. With this Full Moon, the Sun in Capricorn will be in opposition (180°) to the Moon in Cancer. To further clarify how this Full Moon will impact you on a personal level, locate 15° of Capricorn and 15° of Cancer in your birth/natal chart. The issues associated with those two houses are going to be most impacted by this Full Moon’s presence.

Full Moons are times when we need to find balance between the qualities of the two signs involved. Keywords for Cancer include nurturing, intuition, family, emotions, and sensitivity. Capricorn is associated with responsibility, discipline, patience, hard work, and leadership. Focusing our attention on one area while ignoring the other can lead to problems. We will achieve our goals only by finding balance. So we may need to ask ourselves questions like, “Am I being responsible for my own emotional state?”, “Does my family (as I define it) need me to take more (or perhaps less) of a leadership role?”, or “What does my intuition tell me about what areas of my life need more (or less) discipline?”

At the time of this Full Moon in Cancer, we are still under the strong influence of the sixth of seven exact squares (90°) between Uranus and Pluto. This is particularly important right now because the Cancer Full Moon interacts with this square in a powerful way. The Sun is conjunct (0°) Pluto, and the Sun/Pluto and the Moon are all squaring (90°) Uranus. This bring change and transformation to the forefront of our lives in a powerful way, and this can be another period when breakdowns may need to precede breakthroughs.

Full Moons in Cancer are often known as emotional times, and some of us may feel nervous or agitated because we know in our heart that we need to let go of what is familiar in order to move forward.  However, this purging can lead to opportunities for growth and empowerment.  Great healing is also possible due to an exact sextile (60°) between Pluto (the planet of healing) and Chiron (the asteroid associated with healing our deepest wounds).  But as with all sextiles, this one is a gift that can’t be taken for granted.  The gift must be consciously opened or it is lost.

We are being asked to think about how we want to project our emotional power into the world and to take another look at how we use our power to manifest on the physical plane. On both an individual and societal level, these series of squares between Uranus and Pluto have resulted in a new order. “Settling” for what is familiar will very likely lead to frustration. We need to commit to radical change, which will usher in increased power and liberation. But we must be willing to let go of the past in order to make room for this new order, which can be scary and can upset our original plans.

This is a powerful time for us individually and collectively. Uranus makes us long for more freedom and unique experiences, especially due to Pluto being in conjunction (0°) with the Sun at the time of the Full Moon.  It also strongly encourages a sense of responsibility for creating our own state of mind and emotional states. With the involvement of Pluto, our personal and societal “shadows” are being brought out of the darkness and into the light where they can be healed. Until we are conscious of our inner wounds, we remain vulnerable because we cannot change what we cannot see. The process of healing can be challenging, but the short-term pain will lead to long-term gains.

Additionally, the Moon’s South Node is conjunct (0°) Uranus and the North Node is squaring (90°) both the Sun/Pluto and the Moon. Given the Nodes are always in opposition to each other (180°), this means that there will be a square in the sky above us, which is a configuration known as a grand cross (or grand square). This very powerful planetary pattern is adding emphasis to the imperative to break down long-standing patterns so we can all move away from the use of power as force (South Node in Aries) and toward greater equality, peace, and partnership (North Node in Libra). As we have seen with the ongoing squares between Uranus and Pluto, humanity is involved in a collective shift.

Having the Nodes connecting in such a powerful way to the sixth of these squares and at the time of the Full Moon indicates a major turning point is at hand. We will all need to take the initiative and use our courage to diplomatically promote teamwork, responsibility, and integrity. The energy of this configuration is similar to the very powerful cardinal grand cross that occurred back in April 2014. It may be helpful to look back at what challenges you were facing during that time to see if you can discover what steps you need to take now.

Right before the Full Moon on Thursday, January 1, an opposition (180°) between Mars and Jupiter will probably feel like fireworks welcoming in the new year. It will provide us with energy, energy, energy! This energy can, of course, be used or misused. For example, it is not productive to get involved in heated debates, which is possible because Mars can be aggressive and Jupiter can be opinionated. Instead, we need to use this increased energy in the area(s) of our life that will lead to productive gains. Planets only indicate possibilities; it’s up to us to choose how to use the energy available to us.

On Saturday, January 3, Venus moves out of earthy Capricorn and into airy Aquarius, where it will remain until January 28. And the next day (the same day as the Full Moon), Mercury follows Venus into Aquarius. (NOTE: Mercury will remain in Aquarius until March 14, which is a longer than usual stay due to Mercury going retrograde in Aquarius from January 21-February 11. More on that in the next Moon Update.) The combination of Venus and Mercury in Aquarius means that our tastes and our minds will likely become quirky and original. Venus in Aquarius indicates that we may feel drawn to relationships that are unconventional, unselfish, and that provide us with freedom. With Mercury in Aquarius, we are often hungry for knowledge and willing to “think outside the box.” Aquarius is an air sign and often provides intellectual (Mercury) and emotional (Venus) detachment, which can be very helpful in situations that would benefit from a more objective view of reality.

Mercury will form a sextile (60°) to Saturn on Monday, January 5, which will intensify our mental focus. This is a good day to get organized or do any work that requires attention to detail. We are more practical now, so decisions tend to be well thought out. Work done today will probably have long-term benefits, and we will likely want to engage in mental activities that will lead to concrete manifestations and achievement.

Then on Monday, January 12, Mars moves out of Aquarius and into Pisces for a 5-week stay. Pisces softens the energies of Mars. We become more compassionate regarding the impact of our actions. Confrontation and overt aggressiveness are less likely while Mars is in Pisces. We may discover an interest in learning about spiritual issues or feel ready to commit our energy to a cause. Or we could just find more subtle ways to advance our interests and agendas. The only challenge will be to keep our energies focused because the Piscean energy will make us want to drift from project to project and/or our energy may come and go sporadically.

A sextile (60°) between Venus and Uranus on Tuesday, January 13, will provide all of us with a sweet respite. It will bring into our lives a desire for new forms of fun, relationships, and rewards. This aspect often provides a positive influence on all social meetings, financial undertakings, technology, metaphysics, and group activities. You may be more willing than usual today to take risks, but you may not feel ready to commit yet.

Then, a square (90°) between Mars and Saturn on Wednesday, January 14, will provide a dose of reality and clarity regarding our actions. This tense aspect can be helpful as long as we are willing to be flexible and adaptable when taking steps to achieve our goals. Pushing against protocol or rules will only lead to frustration. It’s better today to focus on long-term results. Luckily, that same day, there is a sextile (60°) between Mercury and Uranus that will support any group activities. Our intuition will also be enhanced today, and we may have some original or creative ideas.

Overall, this Full Moon in Cancer will provide us with an opportunity to make important emotional adjustments, particularly in our relationships or in our areas of responsibility. We are being asked to look back to see what we have accomplished during the past year and then think about what we want to focus on and manifest in the new year. This is an enormous opportunity to empower ourselves. According to the Law of Attraction, we bring into our worlds what we focus on, and at the time of the Full Moon, it is critical that we consciously direct our thoughts toward what we want and eradicate any negative thinking.  We may feel emotionally agitated during this time, so it would be helpful to take an “observer perspective” so we don’t get caught up in the drama of those around us. Our focus, instead, should be on taking responsibility for our own actions and reactions. And remember, “Most of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them” (Orison Swett Marden).

Overview of 2015 from an astrological perspective

The two major astrological events in 2015 are (1) the culmination of the ongoing series of squares between Uranus and Pluto and (2) Saturn entering Sagittarius.

  • The seven Uranus-Pluto squares that have occurred between June 2012 and March 2015 will leave an indelible mark on us individually and as a society. Transformational changes have taken place, and the old order is dying to make room for new ways of being in the world. At the time of this Full Moon, we are currently under the influence of the sixth of the seven squares, with the final square occurring in March.  Therefore, the first 3-4 months of this year will provide many of us with a final push to transform what is no longer working in our lives (and society will receive this push, too).  The remainder of 2015 will be a time when we begin to unravel the full meaning of this astrological time period, a process that will likely continue for several years.
  • With Saturn entering ethical, far-reaching Sagittarius, we will be challenged to express our spiritual ideals in practical ways and to be an active participant in creating our own reality. No more sitting back and thinking about things. This will be a year in which we will be expected to take actions that will make a difference in the world around us. This doesn’t mean you need to suddenly become a politician or join a humanitarian group, although it is fine if you do this. Just remember that even small acts can carry tremendous power. We can make a profound difference simply by showing up consciously in our lives and making choices that recognize that we all are one.

Numerology in the year 2015

For those interested in numerology, the year 2015 is an 8 Universal Year (i.e., 2014 = 2 + 0 + 1 + 5 = 8). Everyone on the planet is influenced by the energy of the Universal Year number, so it is a subtle, collective experience.

Many people think of 8 Universal Years as “the money year.” Yes, money can be involved, but it’s so much more than that. 8 Universal Years involve the use of personal and collective power, and money is just one form of power. Unfortunately, in order to use power wisely, we often will be tested to see if we have learned how to use power to support and defend rather than to conquer and dominate. Only the healthy use of power will be rewarded during an 8 Universal Year Number.

On an individual level, balance will be very important during 8 Universal Years. (NOTE: If you turn the 8 on its side, it’s the infinity symbol, which is the epitome of balance.) This may mean looking at whether we are (or aren’t) each using our power wisely to set healthy boundaries in our personal or business relationships. We may also need to look at our sense of responsibility to see if we are (or aren’t) taking care of what is within our sphere of influence. And yes, this can include our relationship to money, but it can also relate to the use of control and authority in any arena. In each area of our lives, it will be helpful to ask ourselves, “Am I being Doris the Doormat or Agatha the Aggressive?” The only healthy approach is assertiveness, not passivity or aggression. We may also need to look at our thoughts, by asking, “Do I have a scarcity mentality or a prosperity mentality.” If you expect scarcity, that’s what you will receive.

For some, this will be a year when we have to face some big issues, such as a tendency to escape into addictions rather than deal with emotions in a healthy way. This can be a year of “spiritual recalibration” for those who haven’t done their work during the preceding 7 Universal Year when introspection and personal development were needed in order to change our perspectives. So although some people think of this year as “the money year,” it may be actually be a year in which some people experience loss, setbacks, and financial difficulties. However, we are all being called to take charge of our lives by assuming control of ourselves. There is actually potential for amazing abundance on all levels, but only if we are each willing to do the work.

This 8 Universal Year is very aligned with the culmination of the seven squares between Uranus and Pluto. Humanity is being asked to look at whether it’s using its power to help or hurt . . . to move toward oneness or move toward separation. Everyone has been and will be looking at what “real” power feels like, including what “real” wealth looks like. Again, balance will be important, so we may see an increased societal focus on gender equality, gay rights, racism, and diversity issues of all kinds. There will likely be shifts in political power throughout the world as our focus shifts to the healthy application of ethics and morals. We will all need to make sure we are being honest and forthright in our interactions. Being sneaky or manipulative will backfire in big ways this year, both individually and collectively.

In sum, 8 Universal Years often involve advancement, recognition, achievement, and financial gain (or loss . . . or both!). Overall, the best way to use the 8 Universal Year’s energy is to think big, plan, organize, manage, focus on being honest and integrous, and put aside petty emotions. Tap into a more practical, business-like approach to life. Don’t waste this valuable year by procrastinating or playing it small. By making important decisions and taking actions that are bold and dynamic, we can reach concrete goals, and yes, even achieve financial prosperity. This is not a year when we should depend on luck. We all have the potential to achieve great things if we can focus our attention and make the effort.
